The right people for the job. With the visit of our first group of 48 Danish tourists travelling to Mauritius under the sign of the Rainbow in June/ July of this year, the launch of Maurisun Travel “Adventure in Paradise” was a success. To assure its continuance, Maurisun Travel has strengthened its management team by taking on Gerard Manuel as Commercial Manager. Gerard Manuel has a vast experience in the tourism industry, holding top positions within the Mauritius hotel industry and the national airline (Air Mauritius). Why Scandinavia? The major tourism groups in Mauritius have neglected the Scandinavian countries for a very long time. Hiding behind the excuse that no direct air access was available from any of these destinations, the state as well as the major tourism players have concentrated on their traditional European countries such as France, UK, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Their decisions were directly related to those of the national carrier, Air Mauritius, which for a long time drove and controlled the air access policy of the country. But a closer look at the Scandinavian market shows that their holiday habits are very attractive for any country wishing to tap into these markets: high disposal income, very long holiday habits (average length of stay of 12/15 days), high consumer spending when on site. It would have taken less marketing expenditure if 40 years ago Mauritius had chosen the option to invest regularly and consistently in the four major countries constituting Scandinavia if they had practiced an extension policy out of Europe. It certainly would have cost considerably less than prospecting new destinations altogether. So it is easy to deduce that the Scandinavian countries remain a high potential market for Mauritius, and given the improved air links, they represent a very good potential for Maurisun. They certainly are still very far from maturity, offering an excellent growth prospect. Lastly, with the Koborg family at the head of the company, we have a competitive advantage in that they are Danish themselves. |
