In the South West of the island, at 400m altitude lays the village of Chamarel surrounded by the National Park of the Black River Gorges, a protected natural heritage site.

 In this region, the World Wild Life Society has managed to save a number of species from extinction like the kestrel, the pink pigeon, and the green parrot.

 “Lakaz Chamarel”, actually meaning “Chamarel house”, is tucked away in a small valley at the foot of Piton Canot Mountain with magnificent tropical gardens encompassing 10 hectares. The charming architecture of the Creole style cottages blends in harmoniously with the natural environment; thus combining authenticity, good taste and refinement with simplicity and friendliness in a relaxing, comfortable way.
